A wasp in the ants’ house: in Borneo, oil palm plantations favour the intruder
In Sabah, Malaysia, the wasp Dasyproctus agilis hollows out stems of the tree Macaranga pearsonii, home to Crematogaster ants, and stocks them with flies for its larvae. A study published in PeerJ on 15 April 2026 finds it more often in oil palm plantations than in logged forest.

Schematic drawing, not to scale. In a hollow Macaranga stem, Crematogaster ants occupy the chambers while the wasp Dasyproctus agilis hollows out a section and stocks it with flies for its larvae. It does not depict a real specimen. Drawing by ScienceOnline from the abstract of Leština D. et al., PeerJ 2026, doi 10.7717/peerj.20984.

Heat and a hungry sea in the same year: thirty years of catches in 254 zones
A Nature Communications study sets the catches of 1,246 species against ocean temperature and algal production. When a year of extreme heat is followed by a year of poor productivity, the odds of a collapsed catch rise by almost 80 per cent. The Mediterranean is among the most exposed seas.

Left, odds ratios of a year of extremely low catch after two consecutive years of extreme heat and after a year of extreme heat followed by minimum primary production, with 95 per cent confidence intervals. Right, share of stocks in a year of extremely low catch in the early 1990s and in the projection to 2060, approximate values given by the authors.
