Galileo’s birthday
Dialogue between Galileo Galilei and Miguel de Cervantes

Sunday, February 19, 2017
Museo Galileo celebrates the 453rd anniversary of the scientist after whom it is named.
On February 19, at 4.00 pm, an impossible (but realistic) dialogue between Galileo and Cervantes will take place, and excerpts from the works of both authors will be read.
The event is the outcome of the imagination, but also the expertise of three enthusiasts who, having got to know about the presence of a copy of Don Quixote in the private library of Galileo, have decided to put him in direct confrontation with Cervantes.
Characters and performers:
The Reader: Mara Miniati
Galileo: Riccardo Pratesi
Cervantes: Antonello La Vergata
The event will be held in Italian and is recommended for adults and children over 12 years. Reservations required at https://dialogogalileocervantes.eventbrite.it
The show is followed – at 5.00 pm – by a "Galilaean happy hour", which is prepared after the scientist's works and the letters of his daughter, Sister Maria Celeste.
The participation is free of charge and included in the admission ticket to the museum.
On that occasion the Museo Galileo will be exceptionally open until 7.00 pm.

Combatting the Invasive Asian Toad in a Global Biodiversity Hotspot

The Asian or Black-spined Toad (Duttaphrynus melanostictus) has all the makings of a classic bad guy. The toad poisons predators, competes with burrow-nesting birds, and disrupts both nutrient pools and parasite dynamics. The Asian Toad’s latest target? Madagascar, where native species may be threatened by predation, competition for resources, or the toad’s natural defensive toxins.

Ciaspolata in notturna

Sabato 11 Febbraio 2017
Treatment has no sufficient effect in 1 of 5 psoriasis patients
A substantial part of people, one in five, undergoing systemic treatment for psoriasis till have considerable problems with their disease. “Our results suggest that the currently available treatments are not sufficiently treating patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis. So in order to manage their disease, more patients need access to currently available biologic agents as well as other new and more efficacious treatments,” says Marcus Schmitt-Egenolf, researcher at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine at Umeå University and corresponding author of the study.
Tail of Stray Black Hole hiding in the Milky Way

By analyzing the gas motion of an extraordinarily fast-moving cosmic cloud in a corner of the Milky Way, astronomers found hints of a wandering black hole hidden in the cloud. This result marks the beginning of the search for quiet black holes; millions of such objects are expected to be floating in the Milky Way although only dozens have been found to date.
Novel risk genes for bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder (BD), characterized by mood swings between positive manic/hypomanic and negative/depressive states, is a common psychiatric disorder with a lifetime prevalence of ~1%. Although epidemiological studies indicate that genetic components contribute to BD development, several genome-wide association studies (GWASs) identified limited number of susceptibility (risk) genes for BD, most of which are yet unidentified.
Important submarine canyons ecosystems are at risk

A recent review of studies of submarine canyons has identified that they are at risk from human activities, and require better protection.
The review was published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science by a team of scientists that are part of the International Network for submarine Canyon Investigation and Scientific Exchange (INCISE). INCISE is an initiative that aims to bring together scientists working on all aspects of submarine canyon research, and to stimulate discussions across disciplines.
